Germany lowers target number of public charging stations

The German Ministry of Transport believes that fewer public charging stations will be needed in the country in 2030 than previously thought. The goal was to have realized 1 million public charging stations by then. The ministry is now putting an end to this, because charging at home is proving to be many times more popular than expected, Bloomberg reports.

There are already ten home chargers for every public charging station in Germany. According to Bloomberg, an analyst from BNEF states that in 2030 Germany would already have enough with less than half of the planned number. The fact that Germany initially ‘set off’ itself in this way is said to have to do with the lobby from the local car industry. In the Netherlands, the common opinion is that there is a threat of a shortage of charging stations. The expectation is that in 2030 there will be 1.9 million electric cars on the road in the Netherlands, which together will need more than 1.7 million charging points, the government estimates for the time being. Of those 1.7 million charging points, almost 1 million should be public or semi-public.
