A free smart charging app to drastically cut EV charging costs

Tado, a German-based provider of smart thermostats and energy management solutions, has released a free smart charging app that has the potential to significantly reduce electric vehicle (EV) charging costs. The app allows EV owners to automatically charge their vehicles when energy prices are low, resulting in an estimated average annual saving of 30% on home charging costs.

The app is compatible with a wide range of EV brands, including Tesla, Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW, Škoda, SEAT, Land Rover, and others. However, for certain brands such as Mercedes, Peugeot, or Kia, the installation and connection of a smart wallbox are required. Compatible wallboxes include those from Zaptec, Wallbox, or Easee.

The full savings potential of the Smart Charging app can be realized when used in combination with the aWATTar Hourly tariff from Tado or with hourly dynamic tariffs offered by other energy providers. By taking advantage of off-peak electricity rates, EV owners can maximize their savings and optimize their charging schedule.

Currently, the app is available for free in several European countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Spain. It can be downloaded from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in German or English, with more languages to follow.

“E-mobility is a crucial part of the energy transition,” notes Christian Deilmann, Co-Founder and CPO of Tado. “That’s why Tado has set itself the goal of greatly boosting the attractiveness of electric cars by radically lowering charging costs, while also helping to establish a renewable energy supply in Europe,”says Deilmann,
